Lost or Broken Fillings: At-Home Temporary Care Measures

These temporary measures should NOT be considered substitutes for professional dental treatment. It's imperative to visit a dentist as soon as possible for proper care.

Remove Debris from the Tooth:

  • Gently swish warm water in your mouth to help remove any food particles or debris from the affected area.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush away any loose debris. Avoid using hard or sharp objects that could damage your tooth or gums.
  • Carefully floss around the affected tooth. This can help dislodge particles that are stuck between your teeth. Be gentle to avoid further damage to the tooth.
  • Try not to poke or prod the area of the broken filling excessively as this could cause irritation or further damage.
  • Rinse with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) to cleanse the area and help soothe any irritation.

Temporary Filling Material:

  • Dental wax or even sugar-free gum can also serve as a temporary filling material in an emergency.

Avoid Certain Foods and Beverages:

  • Steer clear of very hot or cold foods and drinks, as the tooth may be sensitive.
  • Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth with the lost or broken filling.

Pain Relief:

  • If you experience pain, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. Avoid using any pain medication that has previously caused side effects or adverse reactions or that your  doctor has advised against due to potential side effects or adverse reactions.
  • Avoid using aspirin directly on the gums or the cavity, as this could cause a burning sensation.

Avoid Sticky and Hard Foods:

  • Sticky foods can adhere to the cavity and aggravate the condition.
  • Hard foods can cause more damage to the tooth.

Chew on the Opposite Side:

  • Try to chew food on the side of your mouth opposite the affected tooth to avoid discomfort and prevent further damage.

Check for Sharp Edges:

  • Sticky foods can adhere to the cavity and aggravate the condition.
  • If the broken filling has left sharp edges, cover them with a piece of dental wax (found at Rexall) to prevent cuts to your tongue or cheek.
