Dental Trauma: At-Home Temporary Care Measures
These temporary measures should NOT be considered substitutes for professional dental treatment. It's imperative to visit a dentist as soon as possible for proper care.
Knocked-Out Tooth:
- If there is any bleeding, apply a piece of gauze to the area and apply gentle pressure.
- Handle the tooth by the crown (the upper, white portion), not the root.
- Rinse the tooth gently with milk or saline solution without scrubbing the root.
- If possible, reinsert the tooth into the socket and hold it in place.
- If you can’t reinsert it, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or in your mouth next to your cheek.
- See a dentist immediately — time is critical for saving the tooth.
Chipped or Broken Tooth:
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Apply a cold compress to the cheek or lips over the broken tooth to reduce swelling.
- Save any pieces of the broken tooth you can find.
- Visit the dentist as soon as possible.
Bitten Tongue or Lip:
- Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- If there is any bleeding, apply a piece of gauze to the area and apply gentle pressure.
- If there is heavy bleeding or it doesn’t stop, seek immediate medical attention.
Toothache or Jaw Pain:
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
- Use a cold compress to ease pain and swelling.
- Take over-the-counter pain relief if necessary. Avoid using any pain medication that has previously caused side effects or adverse reactions or that your doctor has advised against due to potential side effects or adverse reactions.
Loose Tooth:
- Avoid wiggling the tooth with your tongue or fingers.
- Bite down (if not too uncomfortable) to keep the tooth from moving.
- See the dentist as soon as possible.
